How to know your brand: 3 tips for curating your brand voice

Creating a brand voice based off of other brands is quick & easy way to dull your shine & brand longevity.

And it’s gonna make you dread creating content.

Here are Toyroom Copywriting Studio’s 3 tips for finding your own brand voice and keeping it consistent.

  1. Pick a specific side of your personality.

Your brand voice has to be repeated every day— newsletters, social media posts, pitches, & website copy— so make sure you know that person well!

Your brand voice should be something real and accessible to you, not somebody else’s personality you think is cool.

(Like in high school, when you tried on that one cool cat’s personality. How long did that last?)

Pick the version of you that pushed you to start a business: the side of you that needed a place to express who they are, to carve the path that would let them breathe and live.

It will be cathartic to give that person a voice. It will also be a magnetic & authentic expression that people are drawn to.

2. Use play to get the juicy stuff out.

Fill out in goofy brand questionnaires to find your voice— the “a ha!” moments. You can directly pull from these answers to write your website, newsletters, and social media posts.

Engage in exersizes that are silly, fun, based improvisational techniques meant to bring out charm, wit, and the “it” factor in your business.

3. Make a brand messaging guide.

After the exersizes give you oodles of insights, phrases, and a chance to reconnect to your inner child, you’ll want to organize them into a messaging guide.

Make a “brand bible” of copy examples, specifics words, do’s & don’ts, you ideology, your deepest why— everything that encompasses your brand so you never have to fluster about it again!

You can open this brand bible anytime you are marketing for your business to recreate your brand voice, make your brand memorable & have your copywriting HELP your business instead of hurting it.

(I open my toyroom brand bible everyday! It is very much bookmarked.)
